It’s really hard to scout players in College Football when there’s no spring practice. But I’m going to try my best to give you an accurate visual of the SEC Quarterbacks Auburn will face in 2020.
John Rhys Plumlee / Ole Miss / September 19th

John Rhys Plumlee is one of the most underrated quarterbacks I’ve ever seen. I’m very high on him. He’s super fast and he’s got that gun slinger arm. He’s like Bo Nix in a lot of ways. But honestly, I think Plumlee might be better despite being ranked way behind Nix in the 2019 recruit rankings. He considered Auburn and even said he’d be willing to compete against Bo Nix and Joey Gatewood for the starting job. I think he’d have made a good case to start. But Ole Miss was really the right fit. He took the starting position from Matt Corral, a quarterback who was nearly ranked as a 5-star in 2018. Plumlee is also a great baseball player which explains his speed and arm strength. I expect him to grow as a passer in 2020 and he was a problem for Auburn in 2019, he’ll be a problem this year too.
Terry Wilson / Kentucky / October 3rd

Terry Wilson is a different animal. He’s a really dual threat quarterback. He dealt with a season ending injury early last season. I’m not sure how well he’ll do considering he’s returning from an injury. But when he’s healthy, he’s pretty good. His strengths aren’t in his accuracy but in his run game. But he’s got some accuracy. Just not consistent accuracy. But with that said, he’s a really good quarterback and he’s got speed like a running back. He led his team to a win over Penn State in the Citrus Bowl two years ago so he is a quarterback to take note of.
Jamie Newman / Georgia / October 10th

Jamie Newman might be the best quarterback Auburn faces this year. Or not. We don’t really know what he’s capable of since he’s been playing at Wake Forest for three years and the only talented defense he’s played against is Clemson. The ACC isn’t like the SEC. The SEC is hard hitting, talent filled, traditional football. Every thing goes up a level in the SEC. So I don’t know how good this guy is gonna be against SEC defenses. But he’s got the most overloaded hype train I’ve ever seen with him. He’s talented, yes. But he’s already getting called the best quarterback in the country by many people. That’s simply not true. But let’s go on to his game play. He’s got a nice arm and he’s capable of getting out of the pocket to make big throws. He’s also pretty mobile. The speed isn’t really elite but he’s a force in the run game. There’s a lot of questions I have about Newman but I have to see to believe all this hype.
Kellen Mond / Texas A&M / October 17th

Kellen Mond has struggled against Auburn defenses just about every time he’s played us. Mond is a good passer. Against LSU in 2018 he threw 6 touchdowns. But for some reason, he’s not ever really done things like that against Auburn. Mond’s physical attributes are hard to explain. He’s a big guy. His throwing form is very custom. He’s got some mobility too. I like his poise to be in big situations. And when the ball leaves his arm it’s like a rocket soaring throw the air. Kellen Mond is looking to finally get revenge on Auburn. Can he do it? We’ll have to see.
KJ Costello / Mississippi State / October 31st

KJ Costello is a new face in the SEC. The transfer from Stanford is a big plus for a Mississippi State team that hasn’t had a program changing passer since Dak Prescott. Costello doesn’t have all the speed attributes like the quarterbacks listed above, but he’s got really good accuracy. He’s big at 6’5 and I think he’s going to give Auburn a hard fight. Costello will aggravate SEC defenses in 2020 and I’m eager to see what he can do.
Feleipe Franks / Arkansas / November 7th

Feleipe Franks has been in the his whole college career. Just not at Arkansas. Franks as many recall was Florida’s starting quarterback for a while. But an injury to Franks was the discovery of a new quarterback at Florida which pushed Franks out. He went to Arkansas where fans there are exited to have a skilled quarterback with experience. I think Franks is pretty good. I mean, look up his highlights. But at Florida, he had so much talent at receiver, that could’ve made him look good. Arkansas is all blue chip recruits who develop every now and then. It’s not going to be 4 and 5-star recruits in the Natural State. So I don’t think he’ll be much of a threat to Auburn. But who knows these days?
Myles Brennan / LSU / November 21st

Myles Brennan is a traditional, pocket passing quarterback. He’s got the same style as Joe Burrow. He’s pretty calm. He’s for the most part pretty accurate. However there’s a lot we don’t know about Brennan. He’s not had much experience. I don’t think he’ll be elite but I think he’ll have enough talent to get by. And with star receivers like J’Mar Chase, Arik Gilbert and Terrace Marshall Jr. Myles Brennan despite lacking experience, is gonna do really well against our defense I think. I can see it turning out like Mac Jones who had little experience but did pretty good against Auburn. That brings us to our last player(s).
Mac Jones /or/ Bryce Young / Alabama / November 28th

Alabama’s going to go through a starting quarterback battle in the fall. A Senior pocket passer vs a freshman superstar. Let’s break down Mac Jones first. He’s the traditional Alabama quarterback. He compares to former Bama quarterbacks Greg McElroy and AJ McCarron. He’s got some real accuracy and even though he’s a true pocket passer, he’s got some clutch mobility as he showed against Auburn. He threw for four touchdowns against Auburn in 2019 but he also threw two pick sixes. So he might need some practice but I’d say he’s good. Now lets look at Bryce Young. Young was the #2 overall recruit in 2019. He’s got a fantastic arm. He’s drawing Tua comparisons already. Annoying right? I can’t tell you if they’re realistic or not yet. He’s also way faster than Jones. And honestly, from what I’m hearing, Young’s accuracy is already on the level that Mac Jones’ is. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Young wins the job. There’s a chance Alabama could play them both for certain situations. But either one is gonna be really good.
