Roger McCreary praised by Pro Football Focus

Roger McCreary played a big role for Auburn football in 2019. The cornerback who was ranked 989th in the country according to 247 Sports, was the 33rd best in PFF’s coverage grade among 419 other defensive backs. That’as mind blowing isn’t it? That means McCreary had a better year than hundreds of players who were ranked way ahead of him and yet, he played well and he came to Auburn as a player who was on the very edge of the radar and he proved he could do big things. He could’ve gone to somewhere like Arkansas, Vanderbilt or Georgia Tech where it’s much easier to get playing time. But no, the man chose Auburn and still but up elite numbers. Even though the upcoming junior didn’t start a single game, he played in all thirteen games. And the guy for the most part did really well. PFF says he’s Auburn’s best returning player for 2020. That’s a bold statement considering there’s guys like Bo Nix, Seth Williams, Big Kat Bryant, KJ Britt, and Smoke Monday that could make their case. But PFF may be onto something. Here’s what they said on McCreary.

“In his first season with considerable reps, Roger McCreary clearly did not disappoint. His PFF coverage grade sat at 81.1, which was 33rd of 419 qualifying cornerbacks. McCreary’s ball skills were exceptional — he consistently forced tight coverage and hardly lost at the catch point. He actually forced a contested target at one of the three highest rates on the outside (23 targets in total) and he allowed just nine to be caught while making 11 total plays on the ball.”
