Freshman Insider: Justin Powell

Justin Powell was the #1 recruit in Kentucky. The steady shooting guard picked Auburn. Take a look. In this new segment, we’ll show you some information on the new Auburn signees. Welcome to Freshman Insider.

What he brings

Powell brings to Auburn elite fundamentals and solid shooting. At 6’5, the Kentucky native has a nice nifty drive to the basket. Good all around three point shooting and great potential. Auburn needs some perimeter shooting with the loss of Samir Doughty and J’Von McCormick. Will Powell be as good a shooter as Bryce Brown? Those are some sky high comparisons. I don’t think so. But he’s still a really good shooter.

Where he was ranked

As a recruit, Justin Powell was a 3-star. As I said above, he was the #1 player in Kentucky. How is a 3-star recruit the best in Kentucky you ask? After all, Kentucky gets some of the best recruits in the country. Most of Kentucky’s recruits come from outside of Kentucky. 247 Sports has him ranked 151st nationally. Rivals has him as 49th nationally.

Which NBA player does he compare to?

A look at Powell’s highlights and see a mix of Gordon Hayward and Kyle Korver.

Which jersey number will he wear?

In the picture above, Powell is wearing #24. Since Anfernee McLemore was wearing that number but is now gone because of graduation, I think Powell will wear #24.
