Freshman Insider: Justin Powell

Justin Powell was the #1 recruit in Kentucky. The steady shooting guard picked Auburn. Take a look. In this new segment, we’ll show you some information on the new Auburn signees. Welcome to Freshman Insider.

What he brings

Powell brings to Auburn elite fundamentals and solid shooting. At 6’5, the Kentucky native has a nice nifty drive to the basket. Good all around three point shooting and great potential. Auburn needs some perimeter shooting with the loss of Samir Doughty and J’Von McCormick. Will Powell be as good a shooter as Bryce Brown? Those are some sky high comparisons. I don’t think so. But he’s still a really good shooter.

Where he was ranked

As a recruit, Justin Powell was a 3-star. As I said above, he was the #1 player in Kentucky. How is a 3-star recruit the best in Kentucky you ask? After all, Kentucky gets some of the best recruits in the country. Most of Kentucky’s recruits come from outside of Kentucky. 247 Sports has him ranked 151st nationally. Rivals has him as 49th nationally.

Which NBA player does he compare to?

A look at Powell’s highlights and see a mix of Gordon Hayward and Kyle Korver.

Which jersey number will he wear?

In the picture above, Powell is wearing #24. Since Anfernee McLemore was wearing that number but is now gone because of graduation, I think Powell will wear #24.

I hope you enjoyed this edition of Freshman Insider. War Eagle.

His father and brother made it to Auburn. Might Caleb Nix too?

The name Nix is a familiar one to Auburn fans. Patrick Nix was a star quarterback for the Tigers in the 90s. His son, Bo Nix, has already become legendary on the Plains after a solid freshman year in 2019. But the one Nix no one is talking about is Bo’s brother. Caleb Nix, as you might expect, is a quarterback. Caleb made his first start as a sophomore at the beginning of the 2019 football season for Pinson Valley. He obviously plays a lot like his brother. But now, Caleb Nix will be playing at a new school in 2020. Patrick Nix took a job at Central Phenix City in Alabama which means the Nix family will move along with him. There’s a lot of talent that will surround Caleb which is good. Right now, Caleb only has one offer. And it’s to Troy. But he has some time to make himself known. Maybe even pick up an Auburn offer. He graduates in 2022. That’ll be Bo Nix’s senior year at Auburn. Which means, there’s a chance another Nix could start as a true freshman. Caleb Nix is the next prodigy. But will he be a Tiger? The chances are good. War Eagle.

Jalen Green bumps commitment date back to April 17

We thought Jalen Green would be announcing on April 15. Friday we got the news that it’ll be a little longer than that. Green announced on Twitter that he’d make his decision on April 17. Now, for the record, Jalen told us around April 15. So April 15 wasn’t the actual date. But at least now we have a set time. It’ll be at 11 o’clock CT in a week. The Tigers biggest target of all time might pick Auburn. We’ll see if he does.

Falcons roast Panthers with Cam themed tweet

On Wednesday, the Atlanta Falcons received some bad feedback from their new designed uniforms. So their division rivals, the Carolina Panthers decided to take a shot at them. In a video tweeted out from the Panthers’ account Wednesday afternoon, the Panthers trolled the Falcons’ release by comparing their new jerseys to that of the Mean Machine from the 2005 Adam Sandler movie, “Longest Yard.” The Falcons responded by simply saying this. “#šhïñëTHRUthëŠHÄDE.” Cam Newton on Twitter makes his tweets in strange styles like this. That same hashtag is also used by Newton. The Falcons did this as a troll to the Panthers releasing Cam Newton.

Auburn may have found their #2 running back for their 2021 class

When Auburn offered Alton McCaskill, it was no ordinary offer. The 3-star running back from Texas, loved his offer from Auburn, which came directly from Chad Morris.

“It’s a super college,” McCaskill said. “I always admired them as a kid. I remember watching that game, the famous Kick Six game. It was crazy. It felt super surreal.”

Last season McCaskill ran for 845 yards last season on 121 carries. The 6’1 athlete is the #44 running back in the 2021 class and ranked #596 nationally by 247 Sports.

“He said I have the skillset for their offense and that he basically likes my build,” McCaskill said.“Then, I talked to Coach Cadillac. We were just kind of getting to know each other. He said I reminded him of himself.”

It seems like McCaskill has grown up liking Auburn. And he thinks it’s a big deal to land this offer. I think he’ll end up on the Plains when it’s all said and done. Auburn wants two running backs for their 2021 class. They already have one. I think Alton McCaskill could be their second. War Eagle.

Auburn goes under the radar to pick up grad transfer lineman

Auburn’s offensive live received much needed help on Thursday evening. The Tigers landed Brandon Council, a grad transfer from Akron. This is a huge grab by Auburn and this is the most exited I’ve ever been about an offensive lineman. I can’t really say much about Council’s game because he played at a small school and stats aren’t really recorded for lineman, but I can tell you that he’s a good player. The 325 lb lineman has two years to play at Auburn. I expect him to start both years.

“Of all the schools, I felt like that was the best fit,” Council told Auburn Undercover. “They needed experience and I give them that. I’m a guy that can come solidify the offensive line and we can compete for a national championship.”

With his commitment, the Tigers have center Kaleb Kim, tackle Austin Troxell who was injured with an acl tear early in 2019, and Brandon Council as likely definite starters. War Eagle!
